Half Way Through The Year…

It’s now (more than) 6 months since we started creating our new vegetable plot in the orchard area of our garden in Devon, and I think it’s important to do posts like this every so often to reflect on the work we’ve done and how the garden develops throughout the seasons.

Grow One Thing

When we speak to people about our gardening adventures with Henry and Sebastian, they often respond that they’d love to do something similar with their children / grandchildren / pupils / mindees, but they don’t have the time or the knowledge to start a vegetable garden. Our answer is always; start small – just growContinue reading “Grow One Thing”

Starting our Allotment Style Vegetable Plot

Another year, another vegetable garden! Now we’re living in Devon, we’re getting stuck into creating ourselves a new vegetable garden! We just have a small front garden at the house we’re living in, but we do also have a little orchard area that’s got lots of potential for growing fruit and vegetables! There’s a bareContinue reading “Starting our Allotment Style Vegetable Plot”

Gardening Activities for Babies & Toddlers

Over the last year we’ve come to realise that gardening with a baby in tow can be quite a challenge, especially if you’ve got a little firecracker like our boy Henry, who doesn’t want to sit still for a minute, but has to be supervised at all times as he’s only just 1! However we’veContinue reading “Gardening Activities for Babies & Toddlers”

Henry’s First Harvest!

We’ve involved our 1 year old, Henry, in the garden as much as possible from a very early age, and now that he’s standing we can do much more with him around the raised beds than ever before! We always grow our potatoes in buckets, and when it came to harvesting our first main crops,Continue reading “Henry’s First Harvest!”

Open Farm Sunday at Washingpool Farm

We recently had a holiday in Dorset, staying in a cottage at Washingpool Farm, and by a stroke of good fortune, the first day of our visit coincided with Open Farm Sunday! This meant we could explore the whole farm that was literally on our doorstep; fantastic for Henry as he loves seeing animals, especiallyContinue reading “Open Farm Sunday at Washingpool Farm”

Forde Abbey Kitchen Gardens

I’m a sucker for visiting a stately home if they’ve got a working kitchen garden within the grounds! I loved West Dean Walled Kitchen Garden and Clumber Park is quite close to home (although I don’t visit it as often as I’d like to) so during our recent holiday in Dorset, Forde Abbey was definitelyContinue reading “Forde Abbey Kitchen Gardens”

School Garden Design Workshop

Today I had the pleasure of working with pupils at a local school, Carrfield Primary Academy, as part of their ‘Eco Day’! I worked with four different year groups, first explaining to them how we turned our overgrown garden from this:

Asparagus Fail…

We love asparagus and eat quite a lot of it, but let’s be honest – the season is very short and asparagus is best served fresh from the garden, so when we buy it from the supermarket we know it’s not at its best, and it’s probably been flown in from some far-flung location! SoContinue reading “Asparagus Fail…”

Garden Update May 2016

It’s been a glorious weekend in our part of the UK and we’ve made the most of it by catching up on jobs in the garden! We did lots of tidying and planting; seedlings that we’d started in the greenhouse were desperate for potting on or planting out!
