I’m a sucker for visiting a stately home if they’ve got a working kitchen garden within the grounds! I loved West Dean Walled Kitchen Garden and Clumber Park is quite close to home (although I don’t visit it as often as I’d like to) so during our recent holiday in Dorset, Forde Abbey was definitelyContinue reading “Forde Abbey Kitchen Gardens”
Just a quick post with a few photos from the garden today! The baby slept for a whole hour in his pushchair then happily sat and watched us while we finished our jobs – he loves being outside! Got lots of planting and weeding done, the raised beds are starting to fill up!
Today I had the pleasure of working with pupils at a local school, Carrfield Primary Academy, as part of their ‘Eco Day’! I worked with four different year groups, first explaining to them how we turned our overgrown garden from this:
We love asparagus and eat quite a lot of it, but let’s be honest – the season is very short and asparagus is best served fresh from the garden, so when we buy it from the supermarket we know it’s not at its best, and it’s probably been flown in from some far-flung location! It’s been a glorious weekend in our part of the UK and we’ve made the most of it by catching up on jobs in the garden! We did lots of tidying and planting; seedlings that we’d started in the greenhouse were desperate for potting on or planting out!
What lovely weather it’s been today! Our first opportunity to get out in the garden as a family and get the growing season up and running for 2016! It was also our first chance to introduce Henry to the garden, thanks to my Mum who spent the day walking him round, entertaining him, and pushingContinue reading “The start of a New Growing Season”
I love this time of year! When it’s cold, dark and everyone’s a little bit miserable, it’s a great time to snuggle up in front of the fire on a dark night and start planning the year ahead in the vegetable garden! I’m making this sound very poetic aren’t I! I always create a listContinue reading “Garden Planning 2016”
We’ve been a bit quiet on the blog and Facebook page for the last few weeks, but we have a good reason for that! We’ve been nurturing our new arrival to the garden: Henry Roger Lee was born on the 8th August 2015, weighing 8lb 6oz!
For the past two years I’ve had surprising success with growing cauliflowers, given that they’re quite notorious to get right, and I have to ‘fess up I’ve done nothing special with them, just planted them alongside other brassicas and been pleasantly surprised when I see creamy white heads hiding underneath the giant leaves! View thisContinue reading “3 Ways to Make Cauliflower Rice”
Apart from growing fruit and vegetables, I’m also a little bit obsessed with lavender! It looks beautiful, smells divine, can be dried easily and you can also cook with it! Here are a couple of my favourite lavender recipes that go very well together for an alternative Afternoon Tea!
