New Adventures in the West Country!

We’ve been absent from the blog for a while, as raising two small boys can be quite time consuming!

In 2018 we had the opportunity to live as a family in the South of France, which we relished and inspired us to continue leading a different lifestyle, so when our adventure in France was over, we chose to relocate to the West Country in the UK!

We’re now living in a lovely little farmhouse on the Devon/Somerset border, and we’re lucky enough to have an orchard area which has an ideal amount of space for a small vegetable garden!

This is a complete change from our previous experiences of growing our own fruits and vegetables, as we’ve never gardened ‘allotment style’ before. In the past we’ve always had raised beds, but we simply don’t have the time to create any this year, so it’s going to be straight into the ground!

There are other little areas of the garden that we’re tidying up such as this neglected border along one of the outhouses, that we’re going to use for growing strawberries…

And we also intend to create an ‘edible landscape‘ by interplanting vegetables such as kale, herbs and courgettes amongst the existing flowering plants in the traditional borders at the front of the house, which also need some attention!

For this, we’re taking inspiration from Alys Fowler’s ‘The Edible Garden’ book, which has become my new nighttime reading!

I have absolutely NO clue when it comes to non-edible plants, so it’s a bit of a learning curve to decipher the weeds from the perennials!

The boys are loving this garden, as well as the constant activity on the farm next door. We hope you’ll follow our journey in 2019 as we continue to encourage the boys to be active outdoors, whether that’s growing or playing!
